Cusco Located in the south-western part of the Andes, at an altitude of 3,250m, Cusco is without doubt the main tourist destination in Peru. As a former capital of the Inca Empire, the area is awash with archaeological sites. Later, with the arrival of the Conquistadores, the city flourished with colonial architecture, mainly religious buildings. They are fine examples of baroque and renaissance style. The gold and silver used in the lavish interiors reflect the wealth of ancient Peru. Cusco also offers beautiful villages with vibrant markets and a rich folklore visible in the colourful costumes, music and dance of its inhabitants.
Machu Picchu Reached from Cusco by train along the scenic Urubamba Valley, it is the highlight of any trip to Peru, and it can only be described as one of the wanders of the world. Its dramatic location, a citadel hanging from the Andes and the highly developed architectural techniques are astounding.
Inca Trail This is another important attraction of the area, and one of the most popular treks in the world. The best season to do the trail is fram April to October. It takes four days to travel the 43 km to Machu Picchu, reaching it highest point at Warmi Wanusco at 4,200 m.
