Description
Homeopathy is the second most popular system of healing in the world, used by over 30 million people in Europe alone. In 2005, the World Health Organization estimated that homeopathy is the fastest growing healthcare modality in the world with more than half a billion users. It is over 200 years old, was introduced to the U.K. by Dr Quin in 1828, is sanctioned by the UK government and has been an integral part of the National Health Service (NHS) since 1948. In a report on complementary and alternative therapies published by the House of Lords in November 2000, homeopathy is considered as one of five 'group one' therapies (out of thirty examined) judged to have convincing research evidence of effectiveness that should be more widely available on the NHS.
Homeopathy is a gentle, holistic system of healing that uses very dilute doses of carefully prepared medicines that have been tested on healthy consenting human volunteers. It is based on the principle of 'like cures like' i.e. an illness is treated with a remedy that, in homeopathic clinical trials, has been found to produce similar symptoms in a healthy person. For example, coffee is widely used as a stimulant, but in homeopathic form it can help ameliorate insomnia.
