"Roccapina 3" Unique Chair in Mixed Timbers by Ian Spencer & Cairn Young, England, 2010. Seat Height: 46 cm
This chair is the third in the "Roccapina Series" and the first to be made with individual pieces at an angle. It comprises over 20 diferent timbers in 11 different patterns. The chair is part of the "Chaos Series" which takes its inspiration from the scientific discoveries of how chaos exists within our world. Inspired by the meeting point of several ideas; firstly, how scientific discoveries of the universe`s chaotic nature can influence what we make. When looked at closely, no object is symmetrical or exact in dimension or shape, just as no colour is pure and no surface is smooth. Why then are man-made objects so often symmetrical? Is it a response to our symmetrical bodies, simplicity of construction or a love of conformity? Secondly, when considering which timbers would complement each other or clash, the "Chaos Series" shows that such consideration becomes redundant. The last idea was to make furniture without using traditional construction methods that force a limited range of design possibilities. Using this "Chaotic" technique, the series has broken free of traditional boundaries while maintaining an understanding of how to work with wood.
